DIY Guide: How To Babyproof Your Bathroom

The bathroom is one of the most dangerous rooms in your home. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children aged one through four, and the bathroom is filled with areas that could prove hazardous for any child left unattended.

Keep reading to learn what steps you should take to keep your child safe in the bathroom.

How Do I Keep My Child Safe in The Bathroom?

  • Supervise all bathroom time. A child can drown in less than 2 inches of water. Babies’ heads are heavier than their bodies so it can be difficult for them to lift their heads or turn them to the side on their own. The best thing you can do for your child in the bathroom is to never leave them unattended—especially while your child is around water.
  • Hide all cleaning products and chemicals. Babies and other young children are natural explorers. Even if you have safety latches on your cabinets, it’s best to move cleaning supplies to a higher shelf to prevent determined little hands from reaching them.
  • Turn down the maximum temperature on your water heater. The safest bath temperature for a baby is 100 degrees, however, most water heaters’ maximum water temperature is automatically set to 140 degrees. Turn down the temperature on your water heater to prevent serious scalds or burns.
  • Invest in safety products. Install toilet lid locks and safety latches on all cabinets. Make sure everyone in the home is practiced in closing and locking all cabinet doors and the toilet lid. Purchase a thermometer to check bath temperatures before placing your child in the water.
  • Move all electrical appliances and medications to high shelves. Just like you did with any chemicals, keep all your medications or potentially hazardous electrical appliances (hairdryers, curling irons) out of reach. Wrap and/or secure all loose electrical cords to avoid any chance of strangulation.
