DIY Guide: How To Install A Toilet Seat

Is your toilet seat damaged or outdated and unsightly? This is a minor nuisance, but it creates unnecessary stress each time you use the bathroom. The good news is that replacing the toilet is an easy do-it-yourself project that can be completed in less than an hour.

1. Gather Your Supplies

Gather all of the necessary tools and supplies. These include:

  • Tape measure
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • A half-inch socket wrench
  • Lubricating oil, such as WD-40

2. Measure the Toilet Seat

Use the tape measure to find the exact dimensions of your current toilet seat. Note the length and width of the toilet seat as well as the space between the bolts. Your new seat should have precisely the same measurements for the best results.

3. Remove the Old Toilet Seat

Taking off the old toilet seat could be the most challenging part of the project. This may be because of the toilet’s configuration, your ability to access the bolts in a tight space, and the possibility that the bolts are rusted or attached very tightly. You can simplify this step by generously applying the lubricating oil directly to the bolts. Wait several minutes to allow the lubricating oil to working its magic. Hold the nut with the pliers, and use the socket wrench or pliers to remove the bolt. Keep the old toilet seat nearby in case you need it for reference.

4. Install the New Seat

Before installing the new seat, clean the holes in the toilet using a potent cleaning agent. Then, align the new toilet seat in place, and run the bolts through the holes. Hold each bolt in place with your hands while you turn the nut into position. Raise and lower the toilet seat to ensure that it moves correctly. Then, use your tools to finish tightening the bolts and nuts.
