As spring finally arrives there are a few new chores to add to your checklist. During winter, we make a lot of adjustments to our plumbing, and our homes, in general, to keep us comfortable and to keep aspects from breaking or getting worn down. The start of spring means it’s time to prep our homes for warmer temperatures. We’ve made a list of the most important adjustments you need to make, so whenever you get around to that spring cleaning, all you have to do is check back here!

1. Insulation

To keep pipes from freezing and potentially leaking or bursting most homeowners will add extra insulation to their interior and exterior pipes. As the temperatures begin to warm up, this insulation becomes unnecessary so you can remove it at your convenience.

While adhesive insulating tape is not reusable, it is possible to use the same formfitting faucet covers next autumn.

2. Check for Leaks

While a homeowner is removing the insulating materials from the faucets or pipes, we suggest checking them for damage that will ultimately lead to leaks. If a pipe has a crack or looks rusty, then it is time to contact a plumber for a repair or replacement.

3. Water Heater

Most water heater manufacturers recommend setting your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. However, some homeowners turn the temperature up in the winter in order to combat the cooler temperatures outside. The start of spring is the perfect time to set the temperature back to 120 in order to prevent you from burning yourself on hot water and to lower your energy bills.

This is also a great time to flush your water heater out. This process helps to keep minerals from settling at the bottom of your water heater and rusting. Additionally, removing the sediment from your water heater will improve the efficiency of your water heater which will help to extend the lifetime of the appliance.
